It's already busy! A charging point for electric cars must be installed in the parking spaces of non-residential buildings by the end of the year
The final limit for legally mandated electric car charging points is approaching. The law on equipping buildings with charging points for electric cars mandates that at least one charging point must be installed in a parking area with at least 20 spaces connected to a non-residential building by the end of 2024.
Municipal and parish buildings are covered by the installation obligation, among others. It is the building owner's responsibility to ensure that the installation obligation is met and that the Charging Devices are installed. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom will start monitoring right at the beginning of 2025, so parties subject to the installation obligation should contact companies that manufacture charging devices as soon as possible.
According to the law, the chargers to be installed must be normal-power chargers with Type 2 connectors or high-power chargers with CCS connectors. There are many options on the market for different charging needs. A good solution is to choose chargers with both Type 2 and supersuko connectors. In this way, car heaters also benefit from the devices.
The installation obligation does not apply to buildings in residential use, buildings where no energy is used to maintain the indoor climate (heating or cooling), buildings used by the defense administration, or if the building is owned and used by a micro-enterprise. On the Traficom website , you can check whether your building is covered by the installation obligation.
You still have time to install a legal charging point
Currently, installation of charging points is being ordered for the fall, and companies' installation calendars are filling up fast. You should therefore contact the sellers and installers of the charging points quickly. Before installing a charging point in the destination, a survey needs to be carried out, which, for example, determines the condition of the current electrical infrastructure and a functional location for the charging points. After the survey, the owner of the residential property can choose a suitable charging device and order its installation.
At its fastest, the whole process takes even a month. However, the speed of the process depends a lot on where in Finland the building is located, what kind of installer network there is in the area, what can be found in the mapping and how congested the installation companies' calendars are. So you should quickly contact the installation companies and find out what all is required to install the charging points.
Companies are happy to help you get started
"There is no need or need to worry about the obligation to install charging points," says Teppo Tieranta, . He therefore recommends contacting the companies offering charging solutions and asking more about the installation obligation and the requirements of the law. "At eParking, we have comprehensive partner networks all over Finland, and through us, the obligation to install a charging point required by law can be fulfilled very quickly if necessary. Many charging device manufacturers have also prepared by filling their charging device warehouses," says Tieranta. According to Tieranta, there are inquiries about the installation obligation every week, and installers' calendars fill up quickly, so it's best to get on with it as soon as possible so that the deadline doesn't expire.
"Now even during the summer, when we start inquiries about installing a charging point, we have time to fulfill the installation obligation by the end of the year. It's not worth leaving the start of surveys too close to the end of the year, because first of all, winter makes installation difficult and slows down, and secondly, the deadline will already be approaching then," Tieranta reminds.
