Digital self-service system eCaravan is revolutionizing camping tourism in Finland
Himos now has Finland's first year-round, fully self-service camping tourism area. The new eCaravan system developed by IGL-Technologies Oy responds to the digitalization trend in tourism, where innovative, user-oriented technology is revolutionizing the travel experience.
The digital eCaravan system enables billing of caravan pitches not only for the reserved space but also for electricity based on actual usage in kilowatt hours. The use of smart locks and remote-controlled barriers in the campsite's maintenance and service buildings is also integrated into the web-based system. The service therefore brings more individual flexibility and cost-effectiveness to customers.
“Until now, our carriage area has not been able to operate as ours all year round, because there has been no staff at the reception service during the summer. In the winter, the fixed pricing of electricity has been problematic, because heating the carriages increases electricity consumption considerably. A digital service tailored to our needs solves both challenges,” says Jouni Ojala, .
The collaboration to digitize the campsite was initiated by Himos-Yhtiöt. "After mapping out our needs, we realized that we were running out of service: no Finnish operator had yet produced the solutions we needed, and they didn't seem to be in use anywhere," says Ojala. The selected partner was IGL-Technologies Oy, a developer of wireless technology known for its eParking mobile application and eTolppa technology, which also saw opportunities for international growth in the project.
Evgeni Gordejev, CTO of IGL-Technologies Oy, which developed the new system, states: "We developed the system as a standalone product so that its user interface would remain simple enough. Our goal is that after this pilot project, the eCaravan system could be scaled to function as a platform in other tourism contexts, such as guest marinas. "
Digitalization not only makes camping travel easier, but it can also promote sustainable development. The eCaravan system allows energy consumption, especially in the winter season, to be more efficiently identified and optimized, which may contribute to more conscious choices in electricity use and thus reduce the environmental footprint.

eCaravan has received partial EU funding as part of the CaravanEnergia project. The project aims to promote the electrification of caravan traffic by enabling campervan parking and charging in caravan areas, thus encouraging tourists to switch to low-emission vehicles.
